Elmendorf Apparatus — Tearing Test
Standardised measurement of tear resistance

The Elmendorf apparatus is designed to perform the tearing test in accordance with standards, evaluating the force required to propagate a tear on pre-slitted specimens.

The E/1 model is intended for paper, plastic films, laminates and thin flexible materials.

The E/2 model is specific for textiles, leather and synthetic leather.

Both instruments comply with the main UNI, ISO, ASTM and DIN standards, ensuring reliability and comparability of results.

Precise, repeatable mechanical operation

The measurement principle is based on a calibrated pendulum which, once released, tears the specimen by kinetic energy. The energy loss is measured and converted into a numerical value of tear resistance. The system guarantees repeatable results, ease of use and low maintenance.

Suitable for a wide range of materials

Thanks to interchangeable weights and pendulums, the Elmendorf can be configured to test materials of different thicknesses, strengths and compositions. It is ideal for paper/board laboratories, textiles, packaging and quality control in flexible-material sectors. Optional accessories are available for customised tests.
